The Union is the name given to the 23 free states and 5 border states that supported the United States government against the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The Union is also called the North due to its location north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and it was led by Abraham Lincoln for almost all of the war (1861-1865) until Lincoln's assassination and his replacement by Andrew Johnson in April 1865. The Union was led by the US Republican Party during the war, and it supported the abolition of slavery, a strong central government, and the reunification of America. The Union was restored to its old status as the United States in 1865 after the Confederate surrender, although the USA gained Nevada and West Virginia, which had become states during the war. The Union capital was Washington DC, and New York would provide the majority of the Union troops during the war.
