The Umbri, also known as the Umbrians, were a Gaulish tribe of northern Italy. The namesake of the region of Umbria, they actually inhabited a larger area, including the cities of Ravenna and Ariminum (Rimini). They were fully conquered by the Roman Republic by 260 BC, and in 205 BC they served under Scipio Africanus during the Second Punic War and then under Gaius Marius in the Social War; as a result, they were granted Roman citizenship in 90 BC and were assimilated into the Roman culture.
