
Umar Ghalib (1930-18 November 2020) was Prime Minister of Somalia from 24 January 1991 to 3 January 1997, succeeding Hawadle Madar and preceding Ali Khalif Galaydh.
Biography[]
Umar Ghalib was born in British Somaliland in 1930, and he was educated in England. He worked as a school principal before joining the Somali Youth League, and he served as Siad Barre's Foreign Minister from 1969 to 1977, mediating a 1972 border clash between Uganda and Tanzania (which ultimately led to the Uganda-Tanzania War) and bringing Somalia into the Arab League in 1974. In 1991, Siad Barre appointed him Prime Minister after bringing him out of house arrest, and he continued to serve as Prime Minister under Ali Mahdi Muhammad. He served until 1993 and de facto until 1997. Ghalib died in Hargeisa, Somaliland in 2020 at the age of 90.
