Uhtred of Galloway

Uhtred of Galloway (1128-23 January 1174) was Lord of Galloway from 1161 to 1174, succeeding Fergus of Galloway and preceding Lochlann of Galloway.

Biography[]

Uhtred of Galloway was born in 1128, the son of Fergus of Galloway and the brother of Gille Brigte of Galloway and Affraic of Galloway. He was the maternal grandson of Henry I of England through his mother, an illegitimate daughter of the King. As a boy, he was sent to King Malcolm IV of Scotland as a hostage, and, when his father died in 1161, he became co-ruler of Galloway with his brother Gilla Brigte. They participated in King William the Lion of Scotland's disastrous invasion of Northumbria in 1174, and, after William was captured, the Galwegians rebelled and slaughtered the Normans and English in their land. In 1174, he was brutally murdered by Gille Brigte and was succeeded by his son Lochlann of Galloway.
