The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest federal court of the United States, established on 21 June 1788 as the judicial branch of the federal government. The Supreme Court consists of a total of nine justices, with one Chief Justice and eight associate justices. Justices have life tenure unless they resign, retire, or are impeached, and most justices vote according to conservative, liberal, or moderate ideologies when deciding court cases. The Supreme Court's objective is to judge high-profile cases and apply them to constitutional law, and the court often votes unanimously, although there have been a few occasions in which there have been dissenters during major cases. The Supreme Court meets in Washington DC in the Supreme Court Building on 1 First Street, Northeast.
