The 9th Infantry Division is a US Army infantry division that was active from 1918 to 1919, from 1940 to 1947, from 1947 to 1962, from 1966 to 1969, and from 1972 to 1991. Nicknamed the "Old Reliables", the division was activated in Alabama in July 1918 during World War I, but it was never deployed overseas. The reformed division went on to serve in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Western Europe, and Central Europe during World War II, landing at Utah Beach and taking part in Operation Cobra. The division suffered 23,277 losses during the war, including 3,856 killed in action. The division was reactivated in 1966 during the Vietnam War, fighting in the Mekong Delta from 1967 to 1972. The division was deactivated in 1991.
