US 7th Cavalry Regiment

The US 7th Cavalry Regiment is a cavalry regiment of the US Army that was formed in 1866. The regiment has been nicknamed "Garryowen" because of the Irish dance song that they played as their marching tune, and it is undoubtedly most famous for its role in the Indian Wars, during which the regiment was commanded by George Armstrong Custer, an American Civil War veteran. The regiment took part in the raid on the Washita River at the start of the war on the southern Great Plains, and in 1876 Custer and almost all of his men were massacred at the Battle of the Little Bighorn by the Sioux. The 7th Cavalry would have their revenge during the Nez Perce War, decisively defeating the Nez Perce Native Americans in 1877 at the Battle of Bear Paw, and the regiment would later take part in the Wounded Knee Massacre. From 1904 to 1907 and 1911 to 1915, the regiment served in the Philippine-American War, and the regiment would see action (while dismounted) in the Pacific theater of World War II in New Guinea and the Philippines, and the regiment would fight in the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan War.
