US 505th Infantry Regiment

The 505th Infantry Regiment, originally the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, was an airborne infantry regiment of the US Army that was formed in 1942. The regiment was one of four regiments in the US 82nd Airborne Division, and the 505th first fought in the 1943 Operation Husky during World War II. The 505th later fought at the Battle of Salerno, Operation Overlord, the Netherlands, and the Battle of the Bulge, and the regiment occupied Berlin after the war's end. The 505th went on to fight in the Dominican Republic during the Dominican Civil War, the Vietnam War, Operation Urgent Fury, Operation Just Cause, the Gulf War, Operation Restore Hope, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War. The regiment was headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
