2nd Marine Division

The US 2nd Marine Division "the Silent Second" is a division of the US Marine Corps, activated on 1 February 1941 shortly before World War II began. The division's predecessor, the 6th Marine Regiment, fought at Belleau Wood, Chateau-Thierry, and the Meuse-Argonne during World War I, and the division fought at the Battle of Guadalcanal, Battle of Tarawa, Battle of Saipan, Battle of Tinian, and Battle of Okinawa in the Pacific Ocean during the Second World War. In 1989, the division took part in the invasion of Panama, followed by the Gulf War in 1991 (as a part of Marine Central Command) and the Iraq War from 2003 to 2008.
