The 2nd Infantry Regiment is a US Army regiment which was founded in March 1791 during the Northwest Indian War. The regiment went on to fight in the War of 1812 in Alabama. However, the current regiment traces its lineage to the 6th Infantry, which was founded on 12 April 1808 (raised in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) and merged with four other units in 1815 to form the modern 2nd US Infantry. The 2nd Infantry went on to fight in the Black Hawk War, the Second Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, the California Indian Wars, the American Civil War (during which it was attached to the Army of the Potomac from the Battle of Wilson's Creek and the First Battle of Bull Run to the Battle of Gettysburg), in the Nez Perce War, in the Ghost Dance War, in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish-American War, in the Philippine-American War, in the Western Europe theater of World War II, in the Vietnam War, in the NATO peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War.
