US 25th Infantry Division

The 25th "Tropic Lightning" Infantry Division is a US Army division that was founded in 1941 as a jungle warfare unit. Activated from Hawaii garrison units during World War II, the division first fought in the Guadalcanal campaign from December 1942 to February 1943 before fighting in the New Georgia campaign. From July 1943 to January 1945, the division rested and trained on New Zealand and New Caledonia, and it returned to combat in the January 1945 Battle of Luzon. The division reduced Japanese resistance on the island until late June, after which it was pulled out for training and went on to occupy Japan. The division later served in the Korean War, including in the Pusan Perimeter campaign and the defense of Seoul from the Chinese in 1953. The division deployed to South Vietnam from 1965 to 1971 during the Vietnam War, participating in Operation Cedar Falls, Operation Junction City, and the Battle of Saigon. The division was reorganized as a light infantry division in 1985 and fought in both the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War.
