US 1st Armored Division

The US 1st "Old Ironsides" Armored Division is an armored division of the US Army, founded in 1940. Orlando Ward commanded the division during the North Africa campaign of World War II from 1942 to 1943, and the division would fight on the Italian front of the war until the German surrender on 2 May 1945. During the war, the division lost 1,194 KIA, 5,168 WIA, and 234 DOW, but it captured 41 towns and cities and took 108,740 prisoners. The division was disbanded in 1946, only to be reinstated in 1951. The division took part in the Gulf War against Iraq, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War, continuing to see service into the 21st century.
