The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is a centrist political party in the United Kingdom that was founded in 1981. The party was founded by the moderate wing of the Labor Party, which split from Labor due to concerns that the left-wing faction of the party (led by Michael Foot) had taken over the party. In the 1983 and 1987 general elections, the Social Democratic Party allied with the Liberal Party. In 1988, the SDP merged into the new Liberal Democrats, but a group of dissident SDP members re-founded the party that same year. This SDP dissolved in 1990 after losing the Bootle by-election to a joke political party, and another new SDP was founded that year. The SDP supported hard Euroscepticism and localism, supporting the Brexit referendum.
