The General Union of Workers (UGT) is a Spanish trade union associated with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), founded in 1888. Pablo Iglesias Posse founded the UGT as a Marxist organization, and the UGT would assist the leftist forces of the Second Spanish Republic against Francisco Franco's nationalists during the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. The union's members were exiled after the civil war's end in 1939, and the UGT returned to politics after the restoration of democracy in the 1970s.
