
Tyrol is a historical region of Austria and northern Italy, currently divided between Tirol in Austria and South Tyrol in Italy. Today, it is in a transnational co-operation structure known as "Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino Euroregion", leading to both Italy and Austria working together to preserve the well-being of the region of Tyrol. In 2011, the region had a population of 1,755,186 people, many of them living in the former Tyrolean capital of Merano or the major Austrian city of Innsbruck.
