The Type 59 tank was the main battle tank of the People's Liberation Army of China from 1959 to 2002, with 9,500 being built from 1958 to 1985. 5,500 served with the armed forces of China, while thousands more saw service in Eastern Bloc nations during the Cold War. The Type 59 was based off of the T-54/55 tank of the USSR.
