Biography[]

Carter in 2009
Ty Michael Carter was born in Spokane, Washington, and he later settled in Antioch, California and served in the US Marine Corps from 1998 to 2002. After he was honorably discharged, he worked at several jobs (including at a Home Depot) before divorcing his wife and joining the US Army in 2008. He served as a cavalry scout in the US 61st Cavalry Regiment during the Afghanistan War, and, while on his first deployment to Afghanistan, he was stationed at Combat Outpost Keating on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. On 3 October 2009, Carter - who had initially been unpopular among his comrades - distinguished himself at the Battle of Kamdesh, during which he and his comrade, Sergeant Brad Larson, rescued the wounded Specialist Stephan Mace. Carter suffered from post-traumatic stress and later campaigned against its stigmatization, and he left active duty in September 2014. President Barack Obama presented Carter with the Medal of Honor on 26 August 2013.
