Twickenham is an affluent suburban town within Richmond upon Thames in south-west London, England. Located 10 miles west of Charing Cross, it is located along the River Thames in the former county of Middlesex. Twickenham was part of the manor of Isleworth during Norman times and was used as farmland for several centuries; during the early 17th century, a ferry was established. Starting in 1749, the writer and politician Horace Walpole had his Strawberry Hill House built in Twickenham. In 1818, the enactment of the enclosure system and the planning of major roads, as well as the opening of Twickenham Station in 1848, led to the town's growth. Electricity was introduced in 1902 and the first trams opened a year later. In 2011, Twickenham had 62,148 residents.
