The Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR that existed from 30 April 1918 to 27 October 1924, with Tashkent serving as its capital. In April 1918, in reaction to the Russian Revolution, the people of Turkestan proclaimed the establishment of an autonomous Soviet socialist republic within Soviet Russia. The republic's politicians were divided between supporters of Pan-Turkism and the division of the ASSR into smaller ethnic or regional units. In 1924, Central Asia was divided into smaller Soviet republics, namely the Uzbek SSR, the Turkmen SSR, Tajik ASSR, Kara-Kirghiz Autonomous Oblast, and the Karakalpak Autonomous Oblast.
