Tugay Bey

Tugay Bey (died June 1651) was a general of the Crimean Khanate during the Khmelnytsky Uprising of the mid-17th century.

Biography[]

Tugay Bey was born to the Kazakh Argin family of the Crimean Khanate, and he became a bey on becoming chief of the Or Qapi (Perekop) sanjak at the neck of the Crimean peninsula in 1642. In this position, he commanded the Or Qapi fortress, and, in 1644, he was entrusted with command of the first major Tatar expedition against Poland. He was defeated at the Battle of Ochmatow, but, in 1648, he allied with Bohdan Khmelnytsky's Cossacks and defeated the Poles at the Battle of Zhovti Vody and the Battle of Korsun in May, being promised captives and loot both times. In 1651, he was slain at the Battle of Berestechko.
