Tryggr

Tryggr (died 874) was the East Anglian Governor of London from 870 to 874. He was assassinated at his Governor's Villa in 874 AD at the behest of the Order of the Ancients after he came close to unearthing their conspiracies in London.

Biography[]

Tryggr was born in Norway, and he became a Viking warrior and accompanied Ubbe Ragnarrsson and Ivar the Boneless' Great Heathen Army to England in 865 AD. In 870 AD, he was appointed Governor of London by King Halfdan Whiteshirt of Jorvik after the city's fall, and he ruled from the Governor's Villa and delegated law enforcement to his reeves Stowe and Erke Bodilsson. In 874 AD, he wrote a letter to Ubbe describing how the daily rain in London was making him "as cold and grey as a fish", how he was grateful for the city's strong walls and fat larders, his willingness to give up the Viking lifestyle and settle down, and told Ubbe that, if he was ever tired of sleeping on ships or fighting alongside Ivar, there was a throne waiting for him in London. However, Tryggr came close to discovering the Order of the Ancients' subversive network in the city, leading to the Order of the Ancients sending three assassins to kill him. He was shot dead with several arrows before his guard was captured and lynched, and the assassins also beheaded Tryggr and took the eyes out of his guard to make a statement. His body was later discovered by Stowe and his new ally Eivor as Stowe took Eivor to Tryggr with the goal of forging an alliance between London and the Raven Clan of Ravensthorpe, Northamptonshire.
