The True Whig Party (TWP) is a conservative political party in Liberia. It was founded by African-American settlers and their descendants, who dominated the country through the TWP from 1878 to 1980. The TWP often worked in tandem with the Freemasons, and it supported forced labor, centralization, and protectionism. In 1980, its leader William Tolbert was killed in a coup who opposed his corruption and his clampdown on the opposition, and the vast majority of TWP members and supporters left the party due to its restricted activities. In addition, native Liberians became more poewrful due to their enfranchisement, as they made up the majority of the population.
