The Triple Entente was a military alliance between the United Kingdom, France, and the Russian Empire formed on 31 August 1907 as a counterweight to the Central Powers (the German Empire, Austria-Hungary, and - initially - Italy). The alliance would fight with the Central Powers during World War I, and several more countries would join the Entente alliance, including the United States, Belgium, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Greece, Montenegro, Japan, and Portugal. The alliance lost an important member after the 1917 Russian Revolution, and the alliance did not survive the end of World War I, which it had "won".
