Trenton is the capital city of the US state of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. The area was settled by Quakers in 1679 and named Trenton in 1719 after landholder William Trent, and the city was the site of the decisive Battle of Trenton during the American Revolutionary War. In 1790, Trenton became the state capital, and it grew steadily throughout the 19th century as European immigrants came to work in its textile mills. Trenton was once home to large Italian, Hungarian, and Jewish communities, but it became an urban enclave of middle and lower income African-Americans after the 1950s. In 2016, Trenton had a population of 84,056 people.
