Treaty of Shimoda

The Treaty of Shimoda was a 7 February 1855 treaty signed between the Russian Empire and Japan that gave the northern Kurile Islands to Russia, opened Russian consulates in Japan, and opened the ports of Nagasaki, Shimoda, and Hakodate to Russian merchants. The treaty increased relations between Russia and Japan, and the two nations agreed to joint rule over Sakhalin.
