The Treaty of Hampton Court was a peace treaty between England and France that was signed in 1526 and ratified in April 1527. King Francis I of France and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey signed the peace treaty to end England's role in the Italian War of 1521-26; King Henry VIII of England had lost interest in an alliance with Emperor Charles V after Charles released the captive Francis in the aftermath of the Battle of Pavia. Henry felt that Charles' release of Francis without consenting him first was a betrayal of the alliance, as was the Sack of Rome. Cardinal Wolsey signed the treaty with King Francis, but King Francis refused his suggestion to sign another peace treaty with Emperor Charles, as Francis was still angry about Charles imprisoning him. France and the Habsburgs remained at war until the end of the War of the League of Cognac in 1530.
