A Travois was a frame structure historically used by several Native American peoples to drag loads over land. The travois was invented earlier than the wheel, and it was dragged by hand before the Spanish introduced dogs and horses to North America during the 16th century. The travois was often used on Native trade routes before the Europeans introduced stagecoaches and railroads, after which the travois became obsolete.
