Tran Quy Hai

Tran Quy Hai (1913-1985) was a Lieutenant-General of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) during the Vietnam War. A commander of North Vietnam's army, he was given the Gold Star Medal posthumously and the Medal of Ho Chi Minh.

Biography[]

Tran Quy Hai was born in Tinh Chau in Quang Ngai Province, French Indochina (now Vietnam). Tran became a member of the French Communist Party in 1930 and seized Quang Ngai Province from the Japanese IJA in 1945 during World War II. In 1955 he was appointed Deputy Chief of the People's Army of Vietnam following the creation of North Vietnam and held the post until 1978. Tran commanded North Vietnamese troops during the Battle of Khe Sanh in January 1968 and the Easter Offensive of 1972, and from 1978 until his death in 1985 he held the title of Head of the Central Cipher.
