Trahaearn ap Caradog

Trahaearn ap Caradog (1044-1081) was King of Gwynedd from 1075 to 1081, succeeding Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and preceding Gruffudd ap Cynan.

Biography[]

Trahaearn ap Caradog was the cousin of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, and he seized power in Gwynedd after Bleddyn's death in 1075. Trahaearn fought against Gruffudd ap Cynan, another claimant to the throne, and he was defeated at Gwaed Erw by Gruffudd's Irish army. However, Trahaearn exploited tensions between Gruffudd's Irish soldiers and the local Welsh populace to counterattack, and he forced Gruffudd to flee back to Ireland after defeating him at Bron yr Erw. In 1081, Gruffudd returned to Wales with an army of Danes and Irish, and he was supported by the people of North Wales. Trahaearn was slain at Mynydd Carn, and Gruffudd seized the throne.
