Tower Hamlets is a London borough covering much of the traditional East End. It was formed in 1965 from the merger of the boroughs of Stepney, Poplar, and Bethnal Green, and it is named for the area of southeast Middlesex which owed military service to the Tower of London. It lays adjacent to the east side of the City of London (despite being located within the London Wall) and on the north bank of the River Thames, and it includes much of the Docklands region of London. In 2018, Tower Hamlets had 317,705 residents.
