Touman (died 209 BC), also known as Yabgu Teoman, was the Chanyu of the Xiongnu of the Great Hunnic Empire from 220 to 209 BC, preceding Modu Chanyu.
Biography[]
Touman was the earliest known Xiongnu chanyu, and he rallied the Xiongnu tribes to form the "Great Hunnic Empire" to fight back against the Qin dynasty of China to the south, which had conquered the Ordos region. Touman was unable to hold Meng Tian's 100,000 Qin troops, so he withdrew north and held out for ten years. Touman fought hard against the Yuezhi and other barbarian tribes, and he sent his son Modu Chanyu as a hostage to the Yuezhi, hoping to have him killed in order for Touman to choose his favorite son as the new Chanyu. However, Modu escaped from the Yuezhi and killed Touman during a hunt, and Modu had Touman's family killed before becoming the new Chanyu.
