Toruntay

Toruntay (20 September 1341-) was the Ottoman Beylerbey of Cibyrrhaeot and the eldest son of Suleyman Pasha and Ilknur.

Biography[]

Toruntay was born in Sogut, Bursa, Turkey on 20 September 1341, the eldest son of Suleyman Pasha and his wife Ilknur. He was the paternal grandson of Ottoman ruler Orhan Bey, and his father was Orhan's original heir. As Suleyman came to exercise more control over the beylik, he ensured that his own eldest son, Toruntay, would be in a position to succeed him, granting him the Beylerbeylik of Cibyrrhaeot on 1 February 1343. On 11 April 1356, Suleyman had the young Toruntay betrothed to Gunes Prusid, guaranteeing him a wife by the time he came of age. On Toruntay's coming of age, he also married Ozlem Arslan and Beylerbayan Faghira of Cibyrrhaeot. By the time of his father's death in 1357, Toruntay had 17 legitimate and illegitimate siblings, many of whom were fellow males who were also granted noble titles, making them threats to the succession.
