Tony Quintero was born in Tensaca, Tensaca department, Colombia to a poor family. As a child, he worked as house help for a wealthy family, as he had to support himself, his sick mother, and his three-year-old sister. One day, three local thugs accosted the nine-year-old Quintero as he walked his boss' dog, and they cut an ear off of the dog.
