Tonsberg

Tonsberg, historically Tunsberg, is a city in Vestfold, Norway, located 63 miles southwest of Oslo and along the Oslofjord and the Skagerrak strait. Tunsberg, meaning "garden city", was founded by Harald Fairhair in 871 AD; it is Norway's oldest city. Tunsberg served as a major port of departure for Viking raids during the late 9th century, and King Haakon IV of Norway later built a fortress there during the mid-13th century. The town was destroyed by fire in 1536, but Tonsberg remained one of the most important harbor towns in the country. During the 1850s, Tonsberg became a major center of whaling, but Sandefjord surpassed Tonsberg at the start of the 20th century. In 2014, Tonsberg had a population of 41,486 people.
