Tonio Kampfer

Tonio Kampfer (22 October 1935-17 May 2013) was a Major-General of the Argentine Army during the Dirty War.

Biography[]

Tonio Kampfer was born on 22 October 1935 in Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina to a family of Protestant Germans. Kampfer entered the military academy of Buenos Aires in 1953 and graduated with the rank of Captain, and he served in various functions in the Argentine Army, serving as an attache to Chile on one occasion. By 1977 he was a Major-General, and it was his job to crush Peronist and communist uprisings in the country in the "Dirty War". He was responsible for war crimes, and in 1985 he was sentenced to life imprisonment for taking part in massacres against the rebels. He died in jail in 2013.
