The Tongmenghui, also known as the Chinese United League, was a republican secret society that existed in Qing dynasty-era China from 20 August 1905 to 25 August 1912. The Tongmenghui recruited the people of China for a revolution against the corrupt monarchy, and it purchased weapons and a base in British-ruled Malaya. In 1911, the Tongmenghui returned to China from Japan, moving their base to Shanghai and launching the Xinhai Revolution against the government. In late 1911, the group started the revolution with the Wuchang Uprising, and it would form the core of the Kuomintang Sun party in August 1912.
