Tomoaki Ichioka (1967-) was a Japanese Nippon Ishin no Kai politician who served in the House of Representatives from 22 March to 6 December 2021 (preceding Naoya Taniguchi) and as Prime Minister of Japan from 6 December 2021 (succeeding Kensaku Okada).

Biography[]

Tomoaki Ichioka was born in Osaka, Japan in 1967, and he becmae a massively successful technology entrepreneur before entering politics with the conservative Nippon Ishin no Kai party. In March 2021, he led his party to win 13.66% of the popular vote and 6/40 seats in the House of Representatives, making NIK the third-largest party in Japan. On 22 November 2021, however, the decline of the CDP led to Nippon Ishin no Kai increasing its share of the vote to 14.6% and winning 10 seats in the enlarged 70-seat Diet, making it the main opposition to the ruling LDP as the CDP fell to 13.51% of the vote and 9/70 seats. Ichioka ousted Prime Minister Kensaku Okada's LDP government with the support of a broad coalition of center-left parties and his own right-wing NIK, united only in their opposition to the LDP's political hegemony.

Premiership[]

Ichioka inherited a Diet composed of 22 LDP representatives, 10 from the NIK, 9 from the CDP, 8 from the SDPJ, 6 from Komeito, 6 from the JCP, 6 from Reiwa Shinsengumi, and 4 from the DPFP; he also inherited a budget of ¥95 million with a weekly increase of ¥1 million.
