Tom Udall (18 May 1948-) was a member of the US Senate from New Mexico (D) from 3 January 2009 to 3 January 2021, succeeding Pete Domenici and preceding Ben Ray Lujan. He previously served as Attorney General of New Mexico from 1 January 1991 to 1 January 1999 (succeeding Hal Stratton and preceding Patricia Madrid) and as a member of the US House of Representatives (NM 3) from 3 January 1999 to 3 January 2009 (succeeding Bill Redmond and preceding Ben Ray Lujan).
Biography[]
Tom Udall was born in Tucson, Arizona on 18 May 1948, the son of Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall, the nephew of congressman Mo Udall, and the cousin of Senator Mark Udall. He graduated from Prescott College; Downing College, Cambridge; and the University of New Mexico. He became an Assistant US Attorney and a lawyer, and he failed in his 1982 and 1988 bids for US Congress. From 1991 to 1999, he served as Attorney General of New Mexico, and he then served as a member of the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009 as the representative for New Mexico's 3rd district. In 2008, he won the senatorial election in New Mexico, defeating Republican Party incumbent Pete Domenici. On 25 March 2019, he decided to retire ahead of the 2020 elections.
