
Thomas Terry "Tom" Connally (19 August 1877-28 October 1963) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-TX 11) from 4 March 1917 to 3 March 1929 (succeeding Robert L. Henry and preceding Oliver H. Cross) and a US Senator from Texas from 4 March 1929 to 3 January 1953 (succeeding Earle B. Mayfield and preceding Price Daniel).
Biography[]
Thomas Terry Connally was born in Eddy, Texas in 1877, and he served in the US Army during the Spanish-American War before establishing a law practice in Marlin. He served in the State House from 1901 to 1905, as Falls County prosecuting attorney from 1906 to 1910, in the US House of Representatives from 1917 to 1929, and in the US Senate from 1929 to 1953. Connally was a staunch supporter of President Woodrow Wilson, the League of Nations, and the World Court, supported President Franklin D. Roosevelt's anti-German, anti-Japanese, and internationalist policies, and was a leading supporter of the 1947 Truman Doctrine, the 1948 Marshall Plan, and the formation of NATO in 1949. He left office in 1953 and died in 1963 at the age of 86.
