Tokyo is a metropolis which doubly serves as a prefecture of Japan and the national capital. In 1868, Emperor Meiji moved his court from the city of Kyoto to the city of Edo, which he then renamed Tokyo and created it as the new national capital. In 1943, the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo merged into the Tokyo Metropolis, which also included some islands to the south of Honshu. Tokyo became the world's most populous metropolitan area with a population of over 38 million people, and it became known as a world city with (according to TripAdvisor in 2014) the world's best helpfulness of locals, nightlife, shopping, local public transportation, and cleanliness of streets. In 2018, Tokyo proper had a population of 13,839,910 people.
