Biography[]
Tokugawa Ieyoshi was born on 22 June 1793, son of 11th Tokugawa Shogunate shogun Tokugawa Ienari. Upon his father's death in 1837, he became the 12th shogun, and ordered Mizuno Tadakuni to conduct the Tenpo Reforms, resolving problems with the military, agricultural, economic, financial, and religious systems. He was forced to open up Japan to foreign trade when Commodore Matthew Perry's fleet arrived in Japan, and signed the Treaty of Peace and Amity at Kanagawa. He died soon after, and his son Tokugawa Iesada became the new shogun.
