Todar Mal (1 January 1500-8 November 1589) was the Finance Minister of the Mughal Empire from 1560 to 1589, succeeding Khwaja Malik I'timad Khan and preceding Kalyan Das.
Biography[]
Todar Mal was born in Laharpur, Delhi Sultanate (now in Uttar Pradesh, India) in 1500, and he came from a Hindu family. Sher Shah Suri gave Todar Mal responsibility for building a new fort at Rohtas, and he continued to serve as a courtier in Delhi under the Mughals, being placed in charge of Agra and named Governor of Gujarat. From 1560 to 1589, he served as Akbar's finance minister, managing his mint in Bengal and overhauling the Mughal Empire's revenue system. He also served as a general, fighting against the rebellious subahdar Abdullah Khan Uzbeg of Malwa in 1564 and against Khan Zaman in 1572. He died in Lahore in 1589.
