Tod Robinson Caldwell

Tod Robinson Caldwell (19 February 1818-11 July 1874) was the Republican Governor of North Carolina from 22 March 1871 to 11 July 1874, succeeding William Woods Holden and preceding Curtis Hooks Brogden.

Biography[]

Tod Robinson Caldwell was born in Morganton, North Carolina in 1818, and he became a lawyer in 1841 and served as Burke County solicitor, in the House of Commons from 1842 to 1844, in the State Senate from 1850 to 1851, as Lieutenant Governor from 1868 to 1871, and as Governor from 1871 to 1874. He supported private aid for the reopening of public schools during Reconstruction, and he died in office in 1874.
