
Tlaxcala is a state in east-central Mexico, with Tlaxcala de Xicohtencatl serving as its capital. The state is the smallest in the republic, containing only 1,551 square miles of land (including parts of the Sierra Madre). Home to the Tlaxcalans, Tlaxcala maintained its autonomy until it became a Mexican state in 1857. In 2015, Tlaxcala had a population of 1,272,847 people.
