Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Manhattan, New York City, being known as "the Center of the Universe" due to its status as a major tourist attraction (with 50,000,000 visitors a year) and as the location of several large stores. In 1904, Longacre Square was renamed to Times Square after the New York Times building was built, and the annual New Year's ball drop first occurred on the building's rooftop on 31 December 1907. Times Square is immediately recognizable, and it is one of the most famous locations in the world due to its big lights and its large stores.
