Tim Kaine (born 26 February 1958) was Governor of Virginia (D) from 14 January 2006 to 16 January 2010, succeeding Mark Warner and preceding Bob McDonnell, and US Senator from Virginia from 3 January 2013, succeeding Jim Webb. Kaine was Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential candidate during the 2016 presidential election, during which they won the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College.

Tim Kaine was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and he grew up in Overland Park, Kansas. He graduated from the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School before entering private practice as a lecturer at the University of Richmond School of Law, and he was first elected to public office in 1994, when he was elected to the Richmond, Virginia city council. He was elected Mayor of Richmond in 1998, serving in that post for three years. Kaine then served as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia under Governor Mark Warner from 12 January 2002 to 14 January 2006, succeeding John H. Hager and preceding Bill Bolling. From 2006 to 2010, he served as Governor of Virginia, chaired the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011, was elected to the US Senate in 2013, and was Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential pick during the unsuccessful 2016 presidential election. Kaine was seen as a centrist and an old-fashioned liberal driven by Jesuit ideals, as he was a devout Catholic and a former Jesuit missionary.
