Tibet is a mountainous region of eastern Asia. The region declared independence from China under the 13th Dalai Lama in 1912 after the last Qing dynasty troops left the region due to the Xinhai Revolution. In 1913, Tibet and Mongolia concluded a treaty of mutual recognition, and Tibet fought Chinese warlords to defend Xikang and Qinghai, two ethnically-Tibetan regions, from the 1910s until the 1940s. The Kuomintang government of the Republic of China expanded into Tibet during the 1930s and 1940s while the regents of Tibet quarreled, and the communist government of China invaded and annexed Tibet in 1950. The Tibet Autonomous Region was formed after Mao Zedong and the 14th Dalai Lama came to an agreement, but the Dalai Lama would proclaim Tibet's independence while he was living in exile. Today, Tibet is still a land without a clear owner, with several people supporting the independence of the Buddhist Himalayan region.
