Thuringii

The Thuringii were a Germanic tribe that inhabited the Harz Mountains of central Germania in what is now the German region of Thuringia. The Thuringii established an empire in the late 5th century AD, reaching their territorial peak during the first half of the 6th century; they took Hunnic wives and slaves following the collapse of the Hunnic Empire in the mid-5th century. A large group of Thuringii joined the Lombards on their migration to Italy after being conquered by the Franks from 531 to 532, and they intermarried with the Ostrogoths and Lombards before being assimilated by the Lombards. In 785-786, the Thuringii still in Germany launched a failed revolt against Charlemagne before being suppressed. Today, Thuringia is named for them.
