Thorfinn the Mighty

Thorfinn the Mighty (1009-1064) was Jarl of Orkneyar from 1030 to 1037 (succeeding Brusi Sigurdsson and preceding Rognvald Brusason) and from 1046 to 1064 (succeeding Rognvald and preceding Paul Thorfinnsson), and King of Sudreyjar from 1035 to 1064, succeeding Amlaib mac Sitriuc and preceding Godred Crovan.

Biography[]

Thorfinn the Mighty was the youngest of five sons of Sigurd the Stout, and he became the most powerful of all of the earls of Orkney, ruling substantial territories beyond the northern islands of Scotland. He defeated his nephew and rival Rognvald Brusason in 1037, but he was not entirely secure until he made peace with the Norwegian king Harald Hardrada. In 1048, he made a pilgrimage to Rome, and he appointed the first Bishop of Orkney. He died in 1064.
