Thomas Quiwonkpa

Thomas Quiwonkpa (25 july 1955-15 November 1985) was a general of the Liberian Army who led a failed 1985 coup against President Samuel Doe.

Biography[]

Thomas Quiwonkpa was born in 1955 in Zurlay, Liberia to a family of poor subsistence farmers, and while serving in the Liberian Army, he helped in the 1980 coup that brought Samuel Doe to power. In May 1980, he was promoted to Major-General, but in 1983 he fell out with Doe and was demoted. He fled to Sierra Leone, and he later returned with 24 heavily-armed men to overthrow Doe's government. The coup failed, and he was captured and executed on 15 November 1985 by Krahn soldiers.
